It's not a viral meme that damages the host - however spreading the meme involves the host damaging the target. That may be too fine a distinction for anyone in bio to care, though.

i would say that some people, when infected, are not carriers, and so do not pass on the disease.

I thought a carrier was someone who was not infected, i.e., had not been "struck down" by whatever disease, but was able to infect others with it (á là Typhoid Mary).
Isn't that the inverse sense of what you just said?
